Creative musings.....

Being a beautiful aspect of the feminine, somthing we should cherish.... and whether our creativity comes from being a mother, cooking a great cake, growing herbs and flowers, crafts, or writings, it is as essential to our lives as breathing.
But as you all know we need our space, and we need time, this is why I so love January. This is the month I surround myself with catalogues, this is my quiet time, to plan what I will grow this year, or make, new places I may visit......... there is less demand on my time for home duties, so after work, I cook tea, do the least housework I can, then ....... I muse, I make paper roses, and embroider cloths, I stay in bed on a Saturday morning till 10am sometimes, just day dreaming, I do not go shopping (I do the supermarket as food has to be bought) as I am frightened by crowds, and I truly don't need any more clothes just yet, so the sales do not excite me!!
This way I make a small space in my life to play, no it would not suit us all , but that is the wonderful beauty that is magical in all of us, it is that we are individuals, and I am glad of it, because you all brighten and add wonderful aspects of your creativity to my life, and that is fabulous, and I thank you for it. xx

Welcome to the child of promise........YULE is here

Before I retire quietly and happy to my bed, I would like to recall this evening, which was truly magical.......the nearly full moon was high and snow white in a clear turquoise sky, reflecting in the river below amongst the shades of the setting sun. Across the whole of the countryside before us, a low white mist swirled magically around bare charcoal fields, fingers of misty dreams, wrapped around the trees and frosty sugar glittered on every branch. The whole place felt magical, festive, and very still as if it was just waiting, in silence for that special moment. Our breath was like dragon fire, and we had hot mulled wine, and warm chesnuts, moon cookies, and chocolate logs. Sticky fingers, cold noses, good friends, and happy hearts.

So here are a few words close to my heart this season of joy;

Before all I was, beyond all I am,
I have no nature and no name
I have been from the beginning,
I have seen all manner of things;
I have dwelt in the womb of the Goddess:
I the divine child of the mother.
In the region of the summer stars I find my beginning;
In the pattern of creation I seek my source
In the turning spheres I continue my story.
Born of the Oak Wood, mistletoe wreathed,
Sprung to life as the Goddess breathed.
May I wish you one and all,
peace, joy, and love and hope.
Brightest Blessings
Lynn xxx

Dreaming of a White Christmas.....

I was starting to feel like I was being spread too thinly, I guess that I am not the only one!!

So I have tried to put the brakes on things. This week we are going to a Carole Concert, where all will be dressed in 17ct costume and it is all in candlelight, we are sooo excited. I am going out for lunch with my collegues from work, that too is a nice break, and I did not shop at all this week-end, but we went walking, and I went running.

Why do women work themselves to exhaustion? Do we try to do too much, and in doing this make ourselves ill and grumpy for the people we are doing it for, thats not right is it?
Does anyone have any tips that can help us to relax in the middle of all these wonderful and exciting preparations, for Christmas?

Jingle bells, jingle bells,

I have made this out of vintage hemp and jute, it has been stuffed with soft hay, and scented with orange cinnamon, and spices. I added silver leaf and embroidery

Flowers from Christine

Making fairys....

I printed this vintage linen , gold leafed it, then added the paper mounts,
and crystal vintage dropper. I have stiched on glittery sequins and then I have stuffed this with soft hay, and it is scented with Francincense...of course!

Mixed media using print, paper, embroidery onto vintage linen and hemp. I have stuffed this cushion with soft hay and fragranced it with Myrrh, and Francincense. I have sewn on glittery sequins.

Hello my festive friends, as you are all so busy, I too find myself in the very same situation.
I have been making again.....this time somthing different, throw away cushions, they are printed vintage hemp, and polished jute decorated with prints, and papers, and Lime wash paints, all safe all compostable, and stuffed with meadow hay, that has been scented with christmas if ! and when you get fed up with them you can fling them on the compost heap. I actually thought they could look lovely rotting away with flowers growing up through them.
My divine flowers on the mantle shelf, are from my newish, very lovely sister in law, who has brightened our lives with her beauty, wit, and love for my brother. What more could a family ask for, thanks Christine xx
I hope all my dear friends and very welcome visitors, have the most wonderful week, I'm feeling better and I am going for a run. xxx

At last!! it's finished and.......he loves it ......

YES........more or less finished, please forgive all my photographs, but I am so relieved that I have finished this HUGE project (Istill have two more chairs to paint and recover) and I wanted you to see my progress.
I painted the table and chairs and chest of drawers, in various shades of grey/white in Farrow and Ball colours, so they look as if they had been bought at different times, more random, I hope it looks that way. I have screen printed the seats and table cloth with my own drawn images, in very pale shades of turqoise, grey and brown, on vintage french hemp.
But the best news is that Adrian loves it....what a relief, so next time I bring a project home, I wonder what sort of reception I will get?.....You have got to love them though xxxxx, and thanks so much for all your support my friendsxxxx.

Christmas Gifts.....

I am getting a little bit more confidant, so I have made my Mom a bracelet for Yule and put on a vintage clasp, then I made a sort of vintage tag to put on the wrapper, I will wrap it with velvet ribbon and it will give her a nice hint of the goody inside, and as a selfish reward... I made myself an 'L' to wear on some ribbon, I know I need lots of practise yet but this is fun.
Hope you all have a divine weekend. xxxxx

A day I should like to share with you all.........

Today, was just perfect.
This morning I ran as usual along the icy riverside, frost had traced it's fingers across my path and all nature twinkled in greeting, the bare bones of the trees outlined against the clear sky, stark and Arthur Rackham-ishly beautiful.
On arriving home a parcel was waiting for me from America, I just adore the wonderful post marks, strange and different from ours.

With loads of excitement I opened it I was STUNNED,..... not only by the most prettiest of tissue wrapping, all smelling of honey, and herbs and wild flowers, but inside was the most divine 'Wood Cut Creation' called DREAM from my friend Katie, I was so THRILLED with her gift very much a 'Work of the Heart' thankyou so much Katie,x you are a superb artist, such a dear kind person, and so very gifted. I don't know how you manage to capture this 'moment in time' look and feeling into your special and beautiful creations, but you do.
What a wonderful day.....I'm off to do some dreaming xxx

Nice day out..........

This is my small effort, compared to the florist below! Each year I try to beat nature and grow Paper White narcissus( they normally flower in October) for Yule, (thats our wedding anniversery) because I so love the fragrance mixed with Frankincense, wafting through the house, together with some quietly sung Celtic Motets and Carols, the resulting atmosphere is heady, but beautiful. I think I have done it this year (big smile) they are just peeping above the soil, so I will keep them nice and cool in the shadiest part of the garden and keep my fingers crossed.
The table is coming on really well .....honest!!

I bought these anemones, eucalyptus, and eucalyptus buds from this super florist, I got them home, and popped them in a glass vase on my shelf, I really like the frosty look of the leaves and buds, they go really well with my zinc candle thing and silver bits, they were wrapped really nice in brown paper with raffia, it was a really super treat.

There is this divine florist at Hebden Bridge, I just adore even being near her shop, she really inspires me to try harder. Outside the shop she had on display Christmas roses(hellebore) planted up with ivy and rosmary, and trailing herbs, in a bed of moss in huge zinc buckets, inside well.........just look at the photo's.

Why? This is indeed a good question...asked by my ever patient husband when presented with my latest purchase. As I opened the boot of the car he stood looking at my beaming face full of the pleasure of my latest bargain, and can't bring that! into the house!!
'But it's a Normandy table' it's a fantastic buy £25.00 they were just giving it will look fantastic painted cream'...... not pausing to breath, and feeling a little worried, I looked into my beloved's face, with hope in my heart....go on (pleading look) ....please...(silly smile) it's a brilliant project!!!
It only took 8 days to assemble ( pause) it only took two packets of Caustic soda to clean it (bigger pause) and so far it has only taken me two week ends to paint it( not finished yet ,bigger pause) h'mmm.
I know I'm doing up the kitchen window( which is looking good), and I am also making Yule gifts, and I work full time, but come on, every girl needs a project to get her teeth into......doesn't she? Why don't husbands understand these huh!

Making the most of moss........

In my lunch times I crave the open air and the peace and tranquility of water...near by is a Victorian Cemetery and lots of open land all tumbly beside a river, my escape!
I have discovered some old deserted buldings at the back of this land covered in mossy attributes, thick, damp and lush, I creep around gathering all my booty into plastic carrier bags, emerging from the cemetery like some nature obsessed bag lady, covered in grass stains, mud, and small twiglets, oh and cake crumbs(lunch), my hoard is enough to give me strange satisfied secret smiles all day....the students find this alarming... and tend to leave me well alone during these gathering times, (extra benefits Ha!)
Well it was Marja from 'Home from the heart' who suggested crowns to me well! huh! they are so hard to make honest............I need help now, has anyone got any ideas? That includes you too Marja!! oh and Jane can you help your flowers are simply divine?
Anyhow these are my efforts.............. I do rather like them even though they are a little( a lot) strange.
Hoping you all have a really super week xxx

Gifts from the Heart.........

Some days bring the most delightful post, and today brought me this wonderful gift from Katie at
I have always visited Katies wonderful blogg and her shop 'Sparrows Cottage' and really loved the paper items and crafts that she creates, along with her beautifully written magical blog, so I wrote and asked to buy one of her lovely vintage style books.......we decided on a swop, mine hasn't arrived there yet...but it's in the post, any day now.. .Katie.
I know I can design and make, but it is so good to receive a handmade item that you have not had to design or create, it becomes a real treasure. Just like my needlework case from Gigibird at (Stella and Lynn), and now this wonderful book that I can spend hours just dwelling on what beautiful keepsakes to keep hidden in its pretty pages, all scented with herbs. I also think we see items we like and try to copy them or make somthing similar, it never seems to work for me, the item looses that special essence of the original creator, and is never quite the same, so I am sat looking at my wonderful book and listening to my other musical gift of Celtic Seasons, from Katie............ thinking it is truly a fabulous day.

I have been busy.....

Happy New Celtic Year, xxxxxxx
I have been busy making things, let me tell you what I have been doing..... the shoes are made of organza and felt, and machine embroidered, then cut out. They are have little vintage buttons, and the toe's of the shoes are filled with lavender and lemon verbena
I drew the little bird from a picture and put it onto a silk screen so I can print them now onto any fabric, so I have printed this one onto vintage French Hemp and stuffed it with herbs, rose petals, and lavender, oh and I added a little golden crown because he is a Wren the 'King of birds'.
Then I wrapped my hand made soaps (scented with patchouli and geranium) in tracing paper, adding a crown , and a wax seal. Finally I have taken to painting my old cheese boxes and filling them with treasures like ribbons and buttons, small gifts.
I hope you are all well, and content, and enjoying this strange weather we are having.
Hugs Lynn xx

Samhain....the bringer of Winter, of Dreams, and of Our Beloved Ones

Soon it will be the Fire Festival 'Samhain' or 'Halloween', the Celtic New Year.

It is a special time for me, a time put aside from my everyday living, a time to reach out to the people beloved to me, and for me to send my love to them across the mists of mystery, to speak and say, that they are remembered forever in my heart and will be part of me until we can be together again and rejoice.

Wrap up warm.....

You know when you need somthing just to perk up your spirits, I needed that........ sooo I had a hunt in my room and discovered a nice selection of alpaca, cashmere, and merino fleece I had bought last summer, I also found some white silk guess what I have been doing this week.
I dyed the velvet a turquoise shade to go with my beigey fleece then felted the wools some to the velvet some on it's own, and now I have made two new softer than soft scarves, I added a vintage rose to one ( very Sara Parker, I wish ha!) and a vintage pearl pin to the other.
So send on the snow, winds are no problem, I shall be skipping and dancing in the spiraling Autumn mists no matter how frosty it is.......

Making pumpkins and watching Practical Magic....

Can I recommend the most lovely, brilliant, watchable film 'Practical magic' it is just perfect for this time of the year, you do need props though, they are hot chocolate with mini marshmallows on top, soft cushions, socks, cosy fire, candlelight, family and friends (if possible), sit back and just enjoy.
I made my pumpkins last year, they are made from old linen then stuffed with hay and essential oils of cinnamon and vanilla pods and star anise, so when the room gets warm they still smell scrummy, I then washed them with lime wash to get the peely old look.
I have been watching and painting the Autum leaves as they fall silently into my garden, then in that magical silence remembering...... When I was a little girl my beloved Nanna Pitt told me that if I could catch a falling leaf I could make a wish and it would come true. I tried really hard, but so often failed, but I had sooo much fun playing this game in the woods with my grandparents watching and laughing with me. Now grown and with my own family, I always think of my Nana with love when I watch the Autum leaves falling, and I know too that she is watching them with me.
Why not try catching them yourselves it's not easy you will see what I mean.......

Heart is an artists Gallery in Hebden Bridge.

We go a lot to Hebden Bridge to see our friends, stay up all night drinking hot chocolate under moonlight wrapped in blankets and mucking about in the canal, like children really. Then spend Saturday somtimes wondering down the High Street, pottering about, well today we saw lots of pink ballons, it was Hearts' First Birthday party' can you see the teeny tiny cakes and fab mini sandwiches, and we also had sparkling pink champange in tiny glasses, all made by 'sugar plum fairy' it was divine. I thought it was a great idea for any feasty, festive, thingy, cos you just get scrummy mouthfuls of every delight, and not get greedly overfull, or too tipsy. Loved it.

Then I saw the most fantastic Angel Cake with White Wings, it is ceramic, it is the most prettiest item I own, it kept trying to fly away on the way home, so I have to keep it under glass now, or it may well escape. I have it in the kitchen. I don't know the name of the lady that made it, but if you do, then tell her from me I am thrilled, and that she is very very talented.
